SEATTLE - The Washington men's soccer team, ranked 11th in the NSCAA preseason poll, wrapped up its preseason exhibition schedule with a 1-0 win over British Columbia on Saturday at Husky Soccer Stadium. UW will face Gonzaga on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Spokane in its season opener.
Junior Kai Carroll netted the only ball of the scrimmage at 64:89, pushing the ball neatly past the UBC keeper from 15 feet off a crisp pass from sophomore Benjamin Somoza. The Huskies controlled the ball for much of the game, outshooting the Thunderbirds 16-3.
UW freshman Chad Olsen played in goal the first half, with senior James Dickinson tending the net in the second period. Both Husky keepers made one save each, while UBC keeper Julian Philips had six saves.
"We're pleased to get the result against a tough team," head coach Dean Wurzberger said. "We controlled the game early, but they figured out the way to stay with us was in midfield. We played very well defensively and were able to put in a large amount of players. I think we're right on schedule to kick off our season."
