Palo Alto, CA - Despite the fact the Washington women's gymnastics team (1-2) suffered its second straight dual-meet loss, the Huskies came away from Friday's competition at Stanford on a positive note. The 20th-ranked Huskies lost to the 10th-ranked Cardinal 195.050 to 194.750. The team score was Washington's highest mark of the season. The Huskies set or tied high seasonal marks in all four events.
Stanford senior Larissa Fontaine proved to be the difference maker in the Cardinal victory. She won the all-around title with a score of 39.525, edging Washington's Tiffany Simpson, who turned in a season-best score of 39.400. Fontaine won event titles on vault (9.900), uneven bars (9.900) and a career high score of 9.950 on floor exercise.
Washington senior Lauren Riesenman placed first in the balance beam competition with a season-best score of 9.875. It marked the second time this year Riesenman was won an event title.
Simpson, who is returning to action this year after sitting out the 1999 season with a stress fracture in her right leg, placed or tied for second in all four events, turning in season high scores in the process.
Washington junior Lanna Apisukh, who won the all-around title in the Huskies' first two meets, scored a 38.975 to finish third in the all-around competition. Husky sophomore Allison Bruce had the best meet of her career. She posted career high marks in the vault (9.725), beam (9.725) and floor exercise (9.775).
Washington's team score ranks as the 15th best in the program's history. Last season, the Huskies produced only one score higher than Friday's mark. The Huskies travel to Boise State on Feb. 4 for their next meet.
