ATHENS, Ga. - (Rotation-by-Rotation Recap) The Georgia Gym Dogs got off to an outstanding start in the meet's first rotation, the vault. The Georgia scored a season-high 49.475, which included three scores of 9.9 or higher.
Two different Gym Dogs --freshman Monica Flammer (9.850, tie for fourth place) and junior Amanda Curry (9.900, third place)-- tied their career highs in the event. Also coming through with solid efforts were senior Brooke Andersen, who scored a season-best and first-place finish of 9.95 and junior Kristi Lichey, who scored a 9.925 and finished in second place.
The Huskies scored a 48.925 on the uneven bars, highlighted by senior Crystal Collins' 9.85, which tied her for second in the meet. Washington also had a pair of gymnasts --junior Lanna Apisukh and senior Tiffany Simpson-- record a score of 9.825, which tied for fourth place.
While they didn't experience quite the same problems as last week on bars when they had their worst bars score in 50 meets, the Gym Dogs still encountered a few struggles on the event, posting a score of 49.00.
Georgia's first two competitors of the rotation, Curry and freshman Cassie Bair, ran into some trouble on their landings and posted scores of 9.7 and 9.500, respectively.
Georgia's third competitor of the rotation, senior Caroline Harris, would help the Gym Dogs get back on track, scoring a 9.8, which was followed by a 9.85 from Lichey. Lichey's score was good for second place in the meet.
After falling on the bars for the first time in six meets last week at Alabama, sophomore Eileen Diaz rebounded to tie her career-best of 9.9, which was good for fourth place in the meet. For Diaz, it was the fourth time in the last seven meets that she has scored a 9.9 and also the fourth time in that span that she has won the bars event.
The Huskies had two gymnasts score 9.825 or higher on the vault to help give themselves a 48.750 for the event. Waaramaki came through with Washington's highest score of 9.85, which was good for a tie for fourth in the meet. Simpson came through with her second 9.825 of the evening on the vault, which tied her for sixth.
Georgia continued to stay steady in the third rotation of the meet, the balance beam, scoring a 49.375. The score for Georgia represented its second-highest of the year. Sophomore Talya Vexler led off the rotation for Georgia with a 9.85, which marked the fifth time in 2000 that she has scored a 9.85 or higher on beam.
Giving Georgia an added boost on the event was freshman Anna Gingrich, who missed the last three meets because of a back injury. Gingrich was solid on the event, recording her fourth consecutive "hit" on the event and scoring a 9.8. Curry would continue Georgia's strong run in the event, registering a 9.85, the fourth straight meet that she has score a 9.8 or higher.
However the best was still to come for Georgia as its final two competitors, Bair and Lichey, tallied career-best scores of 9.925 and 9.95, respectively. Washington hit all of its floor routines in the third rotation and scored a 48.95.
Washington's top performer on floor was senior Lauren Riesenman, who recorded a 9.875. The Huskies' other top scorer of the rotation was Simpson, who like in the previous two rotations, scored a 9.825.
