SEATTLE - A towering home run during freshman Jaime Clark's first-ever at-bat at Husky Softball Stadium highlighted Washington's home debut this season as the No. 1 Huskies shut out fourth-ranked Arizona State, 2-0, on Friday before 984 fans. UW, now 44-4 and 6-1 in the conference, will host No. 2 Arizona on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Wildcats (44-4, 7-1) downed UCLA today, 6-4, to move a half-game ahead of the Huskies and Bruins in the conference race.
Clark's 16th homer of the season was a blast that would have landed in Lake Washington beyond the left field fence were it not for an alder tree in the way. UW scored another run in the second frame when senior Jennifer Spediacci singled with a bunt, sophomore Shannon Walsh singled to center field and junior Kelly Hauxhurst doubled to right center to score Spediacci.
Spediacci struck out 11 batters for her eighth double-digit strikeout performance of the season, going the distance to improve to 24-1. ASU's Kirsten Voak (24-4) took the loss for the Sun Devils, who equaled UW's hit total of five but could not push a runner across.
