All-Husky Finals Set At Husky Invitational

SEATTLE - Another day, another dominant performance turned in by the Husky women's tennis team at the Husky Invitational inside Nordstrom Tennis Center today.
The Huskies set up all-Washington finals in both the top singles flight and doubles flight, turning Sunday's finals into coronations. They also have finalists in Flight 2 and Flight 3 of singles but will need to beat someone other than themselves to take those titles.
There were already three Husky vs. Husky match-ups on Saturday, highlighted by the Flight 1 semifinal between senior Tara Simpson and sophomore Joyce Ardies, who make up UW's top doubles combo. Simpson came through against her co-captain by a 6-3, 6-4 margin. In the final she will face freshman upstart Venise Chan, from which big things are expected this season. Chan rolled past Portland's Megan Sporndli, 6-1, 6-0 in her semifinal.
The battle of Aleksandra's went to UW sophomore Aleksandra Malovic, but freshman Aleksandra Krsljanin made her work hard for it. Malovic earned a 7-6, 6-4 win to advance to the Flight 2 final. There she will face Boise State's Stacey Housley, who defeated Husky junior Melinda Wong, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Also going for a title on Sunday will be freshman Ashley Anderson. The Edmonds, Wash. native had no trouble with Caitlin Stocking of Portland, 6-1, 6-0, in their Flight 3 semi. Sophomore Lauren Summers was unable to join Anderson in the final, however, as she lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Portland's Katie Kennel.
"This was another really good day of tennis," said Head Coach Jill Hultquist. "I'm really pleased for Ashley. She made a really good effort and continues to improve. In Tara and Joyce's match, Tara just played so well, but Joyce did a lot of good things on the court as well. I'm proud of both of them. It should be interesting to see Tara and Venise go at it tomorrow. It's great to have all-Husky finals, I get to just sit up above and enjoy it."
The Huskies are assured of capturing their second main doubles title in the past two weeks now, as the duos of Ardies and Simpson, and Chan and Malovic both moved on to the Flight 1 doubles final. Ardies and Simpson have won five-straight matches now including their title at the SDSU Fall Classic #2 last weekend. They topped a Boise State team, 8-3, this morning. Chan and Malovic posted an 8-1 win over teammates Wong and Krsljanin.
Play begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow with doubles play followed by the main draw and consolation singles finals. After Sunday the Huskies will not play again until the start of dual season in late January.
