PALO ALTO, Calif. - For the second time early in this fall season, senior Denise Dy had a tournament run cut short by Stanford's top player, Mallory Burdette. Playing on her home courts at the Taube Tennis Center, the Cardinal All-American got the better of Dy in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships semifinals today.
Dy beat Burdette on her way to the 2009 Regional title, but today Burdette was too tough, winning 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the final. Dy has typically had excellent success against the Cardinal as a whole, and defeated 12th-ranked Stacey Tan of Stanford in the quarters, but Burdette has won the past two meetings.
Dy will now wait to see if she earns an at-large bid to next month's ITA National Indoor Championships, though it would seem likely. The two-time All-American reached the semifinals of that tournament in 2009 and the quarterfinals in 2010.
The next tournament for the full Husky squad will be the Palm Springs Invitational from November 4-6.
