FRESNO, Calif. - Weather cut short the first day of the Bulldog Classic, where the Husky women's tennis team is wrapping up its fall season, but UW made the most of its time on the court, going a combined 7-0 in singles and doubles play at the tourney hosted by Fresno State at the Wathen Tennis Center.
The doubles draws got the farthest, with all three of Washington's tandems moving into the quarterfinals. Andjela Nemcevic teamed with Samantha Smith for an 8-1 win over a San Jose State duo, and freshmen Julija Lukac and Natali Coronel also had an easy round of 16 win. Senior Adrijana Pavlovic and freshman Capucine Gregoire got an impressive win in a tiebreak over the third seeded team of Lee and McPike from Cal Poly.
In the top singles flight, Nemcevic rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Julian Manrix of Cal State Bakersfield. Lukac, Smith, and Gregoire all had byes, and Gregoire was the only Huskies to get her next match in, as she won the first 10 games against Estefania Limpias before Limpias retired.
Pavlovic and Coronel each won their openers in the second singles flight as well, both winning in straight sets.
Play picks up Saturday morning and continues through Sunday.
