FLUSHING, N.Y. - Making her third straight appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, senior Denise Dy started off this run in the same fashion as her last two, with a victory. Dy needed three sets but rolled in the third to move into the round of 16 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.
A semifinalist in this elite event two years ago, and a quarterfinalist last year, Dy is looking for her best finish yet. One of four 5-8 seeds in the draw, Dy was tested in the first round by Maryland's Christine Stancu, who won the ITA Atlantic Regional singles title, beating four ranked players in a row, to make the field.
Dy took the first set, 6-3, but Stancu battled back to even it up with a 6-4 second set win. But the Husky All-American dominated in the third set, winning 6-0.
Tomorrow the tournament suddenly shrinks from sixteen all the way to the final four, as round of 16 and quarterfinal matches are both played on Friday. Dy will play Virginia's Emily Fraser, ranked 36th nationally, in the round of 16.
