SEATTLE - The Huskies had to wait one more day to open Pac-10 play because of rain on Friday, but once UW got the chance to take the field, the No. 6/6 team in the country took two games from No. 14/15 Oregon on Saturday at Husky Softball Stadium. Game one was 3-2 while the second game was 4-2, both in seven innings.
Washington improves to 27-2 overall and 2-0 in league play while Oregon falls to 28-6 and 0-2 in the Pac-10 as the Huskies snapped a 12-game winning streak by the Ducks.
The Husky freshmen made a huge impact in both games, as two Husky freshmen got the wins in the circle and a third got a save. Five of the 11 Husky hits in the two games were by freshmen as well.
"It was really cool to see the team pick each other up," said head coach Heather Tarr. "After Kimi (Pohlman) went down, Marki (Creger-Zier) and Whitney (Jones) came off of the bench and got it done. Our tradition is to accept freshmen and expect them to do great things. The pitchers worked really hard. They have a fire underneath them about proving themselves and they know they can't screw around. They have had some bumps throughout the season but they did a good job today."
Game One - No. 6/6 Washington 3, No. 14/15 Oregon 2
Game One Box
Freshman Kaitlin Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) pitched her eighth complete game, improving to 15-1 in the circle. She allowed just two runs while recording six strikeouts. Through five innings, Inglesby had a no-hitter going.
Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) led off the Husky first reaching base after being hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a passed ball. After Creger-Zier (Steilacoom, Wash.) drew a walk, the two runners advanced on another wild pitch by Jessica Moore. Pohlman was thrown out at third and injured on the play, leaving the game.
Creger-Zier scored on a Niki Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) single up the middle for an early 1-0 lead.
The first hit of the game for Oregon came in the top of the sixth. The Ducks had four-straight hits off of Inglesby to tie the game and drew a walk with the bases loaded to go up 2-1.
Washington would get two runs of its own though in the bottom of the sixth to re-take the lead 3-2 and win the game.
Senior Morgan Stuart (Riverside, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She scored on an error by third baseman Courtney Ceo in which freshman Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) reached first base. Hayward scored the winning run on the second error in the inning by Ceo.
Oregon outhit UW in the game, 6-5. Senior Jenn Salling (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) led the team with two hits.
Game 2 - No. 6/6 Washington 4, No. 14/15 Oregon 2
Game Two Box
The Huskies never trailed in game two, taking a 3-0 lead after four and getting another run in the fifth. Oregon got one run in the fifth and sixth innings.
Bryana Walker (freshman, La Quinta, Calif.) earned her fifth start of the season, improving to 3-1 in the circle with a career-high four strikeouts. She allowed just four hits and one run.
Fellow freshman Whitney Jones (Upland, Calif.) entered in relief, picking up her second career save, allowing just one run while striking out five.
With two outs in the fourth, Inglesby got the Husky offense going with a solo home run, her seventh of the season.
Stuart and Hayward singled in the next two at bats and scored on a double to center by Jones. Jones led the team with two hits in the game. The Huskies and Ducks each had six hits in the game.
A bases loaded walk to Stuart in the fifth drove in the final run.
The final game of the series will be played on Sunday at noon. You can listen to the game live on 1150 AM KKNW.
