SEATTLE - Although it was an exhibition game and nothing counts career or season stat wise, head coach Jamie Clark and his "new" Husky team was impressive in its 2-0 victory over Simon Fraser.
UW had great opportunities in both the first and second half, scoring one goal in each 45 minute session.
The first great shot for UW came in the 17th minute as junior Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.) took a great pass from freshman Andy Thoma (Los Alamos, N.M.) but it was saved by the SFU goalie.
Just seven minute later, there was a foul on the Clan about 20 yards out on the ride side which gave senior Jamie Finch (Bothell, Wash.) a free kick as Beasley sent in the pass to senior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) for the 1-0 lead.
In the final five minutes before halftime, junior Alex Klein (Seattle, Wash.) had two great crosses to Richards who barely missed both attempts.
"I thought we looked good," said Klein. "We played really well and the team played well together. We worked well up and down the field. Brent got his goal and it was good to see other people score. It's not often your center back scores but it's nice to have that variety. We also did well on the defensive side."
Another newcomer, Ben Fisk, a junior from Federal Way, Wash., had a wide open shot in the 50th minute but missed high.
The second Husky goal came in the 51st minute off of a corner kick. Senior Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) took a shot that hit the crossbar and junior Chris Brundage (Gig Harbor, Wash.) kicked it in for the goal, his first career as a Husky.
Other newcomers that got the opportunity to play in the game were Patric Pray, Drew White, Charlie Ranahan, Chad Wissing and Niccolo Piacentini.
Sophomore Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) returned as the starting goalkeeper, making four saves.
The Huskies begin the regular season on Saturday at Gonzaga at 1 p.m.
"We are confident going into Saturday," Klein added. "We are hoping to make a run for the Pac-12 Championship and an NCAA tournament berth. We want to win and have a good overall game to start the season off strong."
