SPOKANE, Wash. - It was clear from the start that the season-opener for the UW men's soccer team belonged to the Huskies at Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon. UW controlled the ball the majority of the time and outshot the Zags 21-9 on the way to a 3-0 shutout.
Head coach Jamie Clark made his Husky debut and was happy overall with how the team performed. "We feel great about getting our first win, yet we know we still have a lot of improvements to make if we want to become one of the top teams in the nation."
Junior newcomer Ben Fisk (Federal Way, Wash.) took the first shot of the game in the second minute that was blocked. A minute later he missed just high.
Fisk, along with senior Jacob Hustedt (Sandy, Utah) were newcomers that got the start for UW. Freshmen Andy Thoma (Los Alamos, N.M.), Chad Wissing (Hilo, Hawai'i) and Charlie Ranahan (Oakland, Calif.) also saw action.
The Huskies took several great shots that just missed throughout the entire match. Senior Casey McCool (Bend, Ore.) had shots in the 11th and 20th minutes that just missed. McCool would have another shot late in the game.
Hustedt took four shots of his own and Fisk had two along with junior Quinton Beasley (Camas, Wash.).
There was no score at the half.
Senior Brent Richards (Camas, Wash.) led the way with six shots and two goals, both off of penalty kicks late in the second half. Hustedt got fouled hard in the box which led to both PK's in the 66th and 75th minutes.
"We are obviously happy to get the win but we know we should have played a lot better and put them away early in the first half," Richards said. "Credit for the PK's goes entirely to Jake. He put in all the hard work to get in the box and draw the fouls. I just stepped up and drove it in the net."
UW got its third goal from sophomore Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.), the first of his career, as Hustedt got the assist on a nice pass from the right side.
Sophomore Spencer Richey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Huskies. The Seattle native made three saves while picking up the shutout.
There were four yellow cards in the first half, three given to UW's Taylor Peay, Hustedt and Fisk.
At 1-0 on the season, UW will head to the Nike Portland Invitational Sept. 2-4 and take on Loyola-Chicago and Florida Gulf Coast.
