ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Facing a third top-25 opponent in three days, and doing so without senior All-American Denise Dy, the Husky women's tennis team rose to the occasion and left the Michigan Invitational on a high note, taking five of six singles matches.
Washington had spent the past two days against Michigan and Georgia Tech coming very close in singles but losing numerous three set matches. Today against the 24th-ranked Razorbacks, the Huskies mostly kept things shorter, winning three straight set matches, but also went 2-0 in third sets.
Senior Samantha Smith stepped up to the No. 1 singles spot while Dy was out with a wrist injury, and after dropping the first set, she rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Stephanie Roy. It was the third three setter of the weekend for Smith, and her first win.
Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic played second singles and picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emily Carbone after falling in three sets the past two days. Freshman Natali Coronel also jumped up to third singles and won by the same score over Claudine Paulson.
Senior Adrijana Pavlovic came back from down a set to beat Catherine Parenteau, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles, and freshman Riko Shimizu earned her first Husky win with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Abby Hayley at No. 6.
Today the Huskies faced Michigan in doubles, and without Dy they lost all three matches, though Shimizu and Coronel played well, losing a close 9-7 decision to UM's Lee and Dodge.
With that the Huskies enter the dual match portion of their schedule, which begins with a challenge as a ranked Sacramento State squad comes to Seattle for UW's home opener, next Friday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m.
