BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior All-American Denise Dy has been a thorn in the paw of the Golden Bears for all four years of her career, and today the Bay Area native knocked off another top-25 Cal opponent in the No. 1 singles match. But at day's end, the seventh-ranked Bears (3-0), who feature five ranked singles players, were too tough on their home courts, knocking off the Huskies, 5-2.
Washington (1-1) beat 32nd-ranked San Diego on Friday to reach the final qualifying round in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, but Cal finished up a 2-0 weekend at the Hellman Tennix Complex and will move on to Charlottesville, Virginia and the remainder of the tourney.
In the top singles match, the 10th-ranked Dy faced 21st-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi for the first time. Dy cruised in the first set, 6-1, then fended off Susanyi in a close second set, 6-4, to pick up her 91st career win and tie Claire Carter (2001-04) for fourth all-time at Washington.
The Huskies also got a nice win at No. 6 singles for the second day in a row from freshman Julija Lukac. The Belgrade, Serbia native was at her best in the clutch today, as she won the first set in a tiebreak, 7-3, and then when the match went to a super-tiebreak to decide things, she took that one, 10-6, over Alice Duranteau.
The depth of the Bears got the better of UW in the middle of the lineup. Four ranked Cal players earned straight set wins at the second through fifth spots. Sophomore Andjela Nemcevic had a good battle at fourth singles, but fell to 74th-ranked Anett Schutting, 7-5, 6-2.
Washington will trek to Minnesota next weekend for a pair of duals, taking on William & Mary on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Minneapolis before facing another Golden team, the Golden Gophers of Minnesota on Feb.5.
