SEATTLE - For the second straight match, Andjela Nemcevic found herself down a set and 1-3 in the second set, and for the second straight match the sophomore battled all the way back for the victory, a win today that clinched a hard-fought 4-3 win for the Huskies over San Diego State. Washington (6-2) also got singles wins from senior Denise Dy and freshman Capucine Gregoire to hold off the 52nd-ranked Aztecs at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies won the doubles point and went out to a 3-0 lead, but San Diego State started to climb back and got within 3-2. But at that point Nemcevic had ran out to a big lead in the third set, and she went on to close out Emma Cioffi, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Cioffi had led, 4-3, in the second set before Nemcevic won the final nine games.
Gregoire was the first Husky to cross the finish line in singles as she won for the sixth consecutive match, 6-2, 6-2, over Sierra Ellison at No. 4 singles. 18th-ranked senior Dy then completed a 7-5, 6-2 victory over 117th-ranked Julia Wais at the top spot, improving to 6-1 at No. 1 singles this season.
After Washington clinched, the Aztecs got the final point as freshman Riko Shimizu dropped a 10-point super-tiebreak in lieu of a full third set. Alicia Aguilar won the No. 5 singles match, 6-7 (2), 7-5, (10-8). At No. 3 singles, senior Samantha Smith fell 7-5, 6-4 to Laura Antonana Iriarte, and senior Adrijana Pavlovic dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision at sixth singles to Kristin Buth.
In doubles play, the freshmen tandem of Shimizu and Julija Lukac posted a 8-4 win at No. 3 over Cioffi and Iriarte, winning six straight games at one point. Dy and Smith then clinched the point at No. 1 doubles, as they took down Roxanne and Sierra Ellison, 8-2. Completing the sweep were Nemcevic and Gregoire who saved two match points at 6-7 to force a tiebreak and win, 7-5.
The Huskies will have the day off tomorrow before returning to the courts on Sunday for a challenging match-up against 34th-ranked St. Mary's. First serve for that match is set for 11 a.m.
