SEATTLE - No. 7/8 UW Huskies had the No. 16/17 UCLA Bruins right where they wanted them. The Huskies took an early 5-0 lead and Kaitlin Inglesby was throwing a two-hitter through five. In the top of the sixth, the Bruins made an improbable comeback, scoring all seven runs with two outs going on to win game one 7-5.
UW is 35-8 overall and 5-7 in Pac-12 play while UCLA is 28-11, 5-5.
Inglesby (Portland, Ore.) had eight strikeouts but allowed six earned runs in 5.2 innings, falling to 17-5 on the year. Sophomore Bryana Walker (La Quinta, Calif.) pitched in relief, allowing just two walks in 1.1 innings. Ally Carda was the starting pitching for UCLA, allowing three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. Jessica Hall would get the win in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings.
UW was led by sophomore leadoff hitter Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, Calif.) with two hits in the game.
Inglesby had troubles in the first inning, walking three batters to load the bases. A long fly out to senior Kimi Pohlman (Sammamish, Wash.) in center ended the first real scoring threat from UCLA.
Freshman Kylee Lahners (Laguna Hills, Calif.) hit her 11th home run of the season, a two-run line drive to left field to put UW up early in the second. Fellow freshman Courtney Gano (West Covina, Calif.) scored after earning a walk.
Gano had a great game at the plate, hitting a two-RBI double down the left field in the third as freshman Kimberlee Souza (Waialua, Hawai'i) and sophomore Hooch Fagaly (Chino, Calif.) both scored after being walked. The first run in the inning was a sacrifice fly to left by Inglesby as senior Nikia Williams (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored. Williams was on third after a double and a UCLA error.
The first hit for UCLA off of Inglesby was a single up the middle by Kellie Fox in the fourth.
With two outs in the sixth, Dani Yudin walked to start the UCLA rally. Carda hit a two-run home run to left field to get the Bruins on the board.
Talee Snow walked and Sam Duran entered to pinch run. The first pitch to Katie Schroeder was sent all the way to the center field wall to make it 5-3. Stephany LaRosa took her first pitch up the middle to drive in the fourth run. Andrea Harrison doubled on the first pitch to left center. B.B. Bates, took her second pitch down left field line as two runs scored. Sami Camuso reached on a Husky error and Bates scored the seventh run.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 4 p.m. at Husky Softball Stadium.
