OJAI, Calif. - Washington's stay at the Pac-12 Championships wrapped up on Saturday with a semifinal appearance in the invitational draw for senior Samantha Smith and freshman Julija Lukac. The pair had defeated a UCLA duo to advance but dropped the semifinal match to an Arizona tandem at Libbey Park.
Lukac and Smith started the day with a quarterfinal win over UCLA's Holly Flemming and Morgan Thomas, prevailing, 8-2. Moving on to the semis, they faced top-seeds Sarah Landsman and Hailey Johnson. The Wildcat pair was effective and earned the 8-4 win.
NCAA Tournament selection is this coming Tuesday, but with the Huskies ranked 52nd in the most recent ITA poll, the likelihood of a fifth-straight postseason selection is slim. That would leave 23rd-ranked senior Denise Dy to compete in the NCAA Singles Championships starting mid-May.
Smith, a four-year starter, wraps her career with matching totals of 69 singles wins and 69 doubles wins. The doubles mark ranks ninth in Washington history.
