Huskies Drop Heartbreaker In OT After Early Lead

SEATTLE - Washington took an early 2-0 lead going into the half but Brown fought back to score three times in the second half and put the game-winner in the back of the net in OT to win 4-3 in the opening game for both teams in the Husky Classic on Friday night.
Brown's (6-1-0) Ben Maurey scored the game-winner in the 93rd minute of the first overtime period on an assist by Thomas McNamara to shock the Huskies on their home field. McNamara crossed the ball from the left side of the field while Maurey headed it in to the back of the net from the right side of the box.
"It was our best 45 minutes of the year followed by one of the toughest, not the worst but one of the toughest," said head coach Jamie Clark. "They (Brown) were very opportunistic and made good of their chances. Credit to them that's what a team that wins games does. They were better tonight and tougher tonight. I thought we deserved more and now we can't look back its just looking forward. If we win Sunday we will have a streak going. We have gone through our tough streak and now it's time to get moving forward."
Washington (4-3-1) got a goal in the eighth minute from senior co-captain Dylan Tucker-Gangnes (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) to take the 1-0 lead on a header off of a free kick taken by fellow senior co-captain Ben Fisk (Federal Way, Wash.).
The Huskies went up 2-0 in the 26th minute on an own goal. Junior Michael Harris (Shoreline, Wash.) performed his always dangerous flip throw-in which hit the head of one of the Brown defenders and went into the net.
The offensive numbers at the half were dead even in every category except the score. The Huskies put on a lot of pressure up front, bringing energy and speed to the pitch against the Bears in the first 45 minutes.
Brown came out in the second half playing similar to how the Huskies did in the first half. The Bears scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute as Voltaire Escalona scored on a chip off of a short pass from McNamara.
Kevin Gavey tied the game just 13 minutes later on a header in the box off of a cross from Maurey.
Senior Abdul Aman (Seattle, Wash.) scored his first goal of the season to get the lead back for the Huskies. His goal in the 78th minute was a beauty, a nice strike from the right side of the box on a pass from freshman James Moberg.
Up 3-2, the UW gave up the tying goal just over a minute later as Daniel Taylor scored off of a deflected shot in front of the goal. Escalona was credited with the assist.
Brown took 16 total shots in the game to 13 for UW and had the advantage on corners, 6-5.
Junior goalkeeper Spencer Richey (Seattle, Wash.) made six saves in the game, five in the second period alone.
Washington will host Seattle U on Sunday at noon. The game will air live on the Pac-12 Networks. Brown will face Portland at 3 p.m. in the final game of the Husky Classic.
