Greatest Husky Plays in Apple Cup History

As part of this year's Apple Cup celebration, GoHuskies.com is counting down 10 of the top plays in the history of the Washington-Washington State match up.

1950 Apple Cup
The Huskies rolled to a 52-21 victory in Spokane thanks to Hugh McElhenny, who rushed for a school record 296 yards and five TD's. He capped his day with an 84-yard TD run and pushed his season rushing total to 1,107 yards--a conference record at the time.

1960 Apple Cup
Late in the fourth quarter of the 1960 Apple Cup, Bob Hivner hit Don McKeta in the end zone for the two-point conversion to give the Dawgs the 8-7 lead after Kermit Jorgenson scored on a QB sneak. The game would end with the same score and UW would go on to beat No. 1 Minnesota in the Rose Bowl.

1974 Apple Cup
In the 1974 Apple Cup, Husky quarterback Dennis Fitzpatrick ran wild all over Washington State. He rushed for a UW quarterback record 249 yards and led the Huskies to a 24-17 victory in what would be head coach Jim Owens' last game leading the Dawgs.

1975 Apple Cup
The Huskies cap a comeback from 13 points down in the 1975 Apple Cup when Spider Gaines snags a tipped pass from Warren Moon and runs it into the endzone with less than two minutes left in the game. The Huskies would hold on to win 28-27 in Don James' first Apple Cup.

1975 Apple Cup
With the Huskies trailing by 13 points, Alvin Burleson returns an interception 93 yards for a touchdown in the 1975 Apple Cup to start one of the greatest comebacks in UW history. The interception still stands as the longest in team history and the Huskies eventually won 28-27 to give Don James his first Apple Cup victory.

1981 Apple Cup
In the game to determine the Pac-10's Rose Bowl entry, Paul Skansi makes a difficult diving catch of a 15-yard Steve Pelluer pass in the end zone, putting UW ahead. The Huskies eventually won 23-10 and would go on to beat Iowa 28-0 in the Rose Bowl.

1996 Apple Cup
The 12th-ranked Huskies played in their first-ever overtime in the 1996 Apple Cup and escaped Pullman with a 31-24 victory when Brock Huard hit Jerome Pathon for the go-ahead score.

2001 Apple Cup
The 9th-ranked Cougars strolled into Husky Stadium with a 9-1 record and a Pac-10 Championship within their reach, but the 16th-ranked Huskies proved to be too much in the 2001 game. The Huskies snagged momentum in the first half when Ben Mahdavi stopped Frank Minnich on a key 4th-and-goal play from the one-yard line. Washington would go on to the 26-14 victory.

2002 Apple Cup
Defensive end Kai Ellis batted a backwards pass down and pounced on it to secure a 29-26 triple-overtime win over the third-ranked Cougars in 2002.

2003 Apple Cup
The Huskies erased a 19-14 deficit with 1:10 left in the 2003 game when Cody Pickett connected with freshman Corey Williams for the go ahead touchdown. The Huskies would add another late score on a Marquis Cooper interception to beat the 8th-ranked Cougars 27-19.
