VALENCIA, Calif. - If you asked anyone on the Husky women's golf team what their main goal this season was, each one would unanimously share the same answer: To be the best UW team ever.

After Wednesday's final round of the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship, the Huskies are halfway to their goal. Washington finished second in the Conference championship held at Valencia Country Club, passing by host UCLA in the final round to notch its best-ever result in the tournament.
The Huskies combined to shoot 5-over 293 on the day and finish +13 overall, two strokes better than the Bruins. UW's three-day total of 877 was 13 strokes better than its lowest score in 26 previous Conference championships.
No. 1 ranked USC took home the team and individual titles in convincing fashion, beating Washington by 24 strokes. The Trojans' result was not surprising, but the fourth-seeded Huskies' finish definitely raised some eyebrows.
"There are so many great teams in our conference, from top to bottom," said 30th-year Husky Coach Mary Lou Mulflur, whose previous best finish was third in 1988. "For us to end up finishing second in this conference feels good. It feels real good."
The Huskies managed to move up the leader board despite off days from their two best players. SooBin Kim, who was named First Team All-Conference following the tournament, and Charlotte Thomas, who garnered Second Team All-Conference recognition, both had their worse rounds of the three day, 54-hole tournament.
Kim shot 75 and Thomas shot a non-counting 79.
"It's a testament to the depth of this team," Mulflur said. "Our two best players all year did not have stellar days today and we still moved up the leaderboard."
Kim ended up the top Husky finisher tying tied for 11th overall with a three-round total of 219 (+3). Thomas tied for 18th with 222 (+7).
Sophomore Cyd Okino was the individual hero of the day for the Huskies. After registering scores of 79 and 81, Okino bounced back with a final round 69. She had five birdies total, including three-straight through holes 15 through 17.
"That was an impressive round she had on the back side," Mulflur said of her lone American in the five-player lineup. "That back nine, it was windy. It was really tough. I couldn't be happier for her.
"It's hard when you feel like your team is playing good and you're not contributing. She couldn't have made a bigger contribution today."
Okino moved all the way up from 50th to 33rd on the leaderboard and finished +13 overall.
Sophomore Jennifer Yang turned in the second-best round of the day among Huskies. She shot even-par 72 with just one birdie and one bogey on her scorecard. She ended up second among Husky individuals tying for 14th with a three-day total of 220 (+4).
Freshman walk-on Ying Luo shot 77 and ended up tied for 29th with a score of 229 (+13).
USC freshman Annie Park won medalist honors by two strokes over teammate Sophia Popov. Park ended up with a final tally of 7-under 209.
In all, USC had four golfers finish in the top 10. No other team had more than one.
The Huskies attention will now turn to the NCAA regionals and championship. If they are to complete their goal of being the best Husky team ever, they will have to finish sixth or better at the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 21-24 at the University of Georgia's home course.
As Mulflur has learned, you cannot discount anything with this resilient group of girls, which consists of three sophomores and two freshmen.
"We will definitely be hungry for more," she said. "That's for sure."
But first, they must get out of the NCAA regional. Washington failed to advance out of the Penn State region last year and have only participated in the NCAA championship once over the last six years.
The Huskies will find out which NCAA regional site they will be sent to on April 29 at 6 p.m.
