Shelton Named First-Team Academic All-America
December 04, 2014 | Football
Senior defensive lineman Danny Shelton became the first Husky football player named first-team Academic All-America in 23 years when the Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team was announced Thursday. Shelton was among 24 players selected to the first team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Shelton boasts a 3.54 grade point average in anthropology. He spent the fall as a First-Year Interest Group (FIG) advisor and has also spent two summers in Tahiti studying colonization and leading football clinics for adults.
On Monday, the Auburn, Wash., native was named to the All-Pac-12 Academic team for a third straight season. Shelton is the only Pac-12 player recognized on the Capital One Academic All-America® Division I first team. Stanford defensive lineman Henry Anderson was named to the second team.
Shelton is also a standout on the football field. He was honorable mention All-Pac-12 last season, but upped his game to new heights this year. In 13 games, Shelton is second on the team with 89 total tackles and is second with 16.5 tackles for loss and third with 9.0 sacks. He was named a midseason All-American by ESPN, NFL.com and The Sporting News and earned first-team All-Pac-12 on Tuesday.
Shelton is the 14th Washington player named to the Academic All-America first team since 1955. The last Huskies player named to the first team was offensive lineman Ed Cunningham in 1991.
