SEATTLE – UW gymnastics had its best meet of the season on its way to 195.950 points in a narrow loss to Arizona Saturday evening at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Wildcats finished with a score of 196.050.
“You compete to win, but I absolutely love the fact that we are continuing to improve,” head coach Joanne Bowers said. “That's what we preach every day. If we continue to improve, we're going to be where we need to be at the end of the year.”
The Huskies have increased their score with each passing meet, jumping another four-tenths against Arizona after adding 1.225 points at NC State.
“We got a big improvement,” Bowers said. “That's all we can do every meet – get a little better.”
Freshman Hailey Burleson continued her solid start to the season with a 9.825 on vault to lead the Huskies, finishing second in the event. Joslyn Goings and Allison Northey each posted a 9.775 in a five-way tie for third place.
Northey won bars with a 9.875, her highest score of the meet as she competed all-around. Janae Janik took fifth in the event with a 9.8 as Arizona had three gymnasts post 9.825 or better.
Trailing by a slim margin going into the third rotation, the Huskies got great performances from Jackie McCartin and Stephanie Stowe on beam, who each posted scores of 9.875. McKenzie Fechter contributed a 9.85 and Janik got a 9.825.
The GymDawgs had a fantastic floor showing with all five contributing scores at 9.8 or higher. Faith Morrison and Zoey Schaefer tied for the top score, each posting a 9.925, the highest score given out in the meet. Northey and Madison Podlucky each got a 9.85 to tie for fourth.
“Mack does such a great job leading us off,” Bowers said. “We just continued to build from there and the scores just kept getting higher.”
Northey was the only Husky to compete all-around in the meet and finished with a score of 39.2. It was the first time any Husky has competed all-around this season. She finished second to Arizona's Allison Flores.
The Huskies will continue their season next weekend at Oregon State on Friday, Jan. 30. The meet will being at 7 p.m. PT. Follow the GymDawgs on Instagram and Twitter at @UWGymnastics.
