Huskies Dominate Sacramento State At Home
February 21, 2015 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE - The 51st-ranked University of Washington Women's Tennis team picked up their sixth victory of the season by defeating Sacramento State 6-1. The Huskies have now won three straight matches, their longest win-streak of the season. It was just the second match in Seattle for the Huskies this season, where the Dawgs have gone 2-0.
Washington had another strong start in doubles play with Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora winning 8-3 and Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu finishing close behind with a 8-2 victory of their own. The Huskies have won the doubles point in seven of their ten matches this season, as well as in all six of their victories.
The Huskies rode the momentum into singles play, earning first-set victories on all six courts. Hot starts have been a regular occurrence for the Dawgs as of late, who have collectively lost only three opening sets in the last four matches. Miki Kobayashi picked up UW's first singles win with a an easy 6-0, 6-1 shutout at court three. Grace Ysidora then completed a 6-0, 6-0 shutout on court two and Julija Lukac won 6-1, 6-1 at court four to clinch a Washington victory. Riko Shimizu and Capucine Gregoire also cruised to victories of 6-2, 6-1 at court five and 6-1, 6-2 at court six respectively.
The only real drama of the match came during Douglas-Miron's matchup versus Alina Soltanici at court one. Douglas-Miron made quick work of the first set, winning 6-1. But Soltanici won a closely-battled second set 6-3 to force a tiebreaker set. Douglas-Miron took an early 7-4 lead, but Soltanici scored five straight points and won the tiebreaker 10-8, giving Sacramento State their only point.
“I think we're getting better with every match that we play,” said first-year head coach Robin Stephenson. “Winning becomes a habit. The more you win, the more confidence you gain. The girls are doing a great job of improving day-by-day and this match will certainly help us moving forward.”
The Huskies hope their winning ways continue as they approach match two of a four-match home stead versus cross-state rival Washington State on Friday, March 6 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
