Huskies Tested Against No. 28 Auburn in 5-2 Loss

HOUSTON – The No. 42 University of Washington women's tennis team battled hard but fell to 28th-ranked Auburn, 5-2, Sunday morning, at the John E. Hoff Courts at the University of Houston. The Huskies, who have faced four-straight ranked opponents, are now 3-4 on the season and next face San Diego State in California on Friday, Feb. 13.
Despite the outcome, the Huskies saw a stellar performance by 90th-ranked Elianne Douglas-Miron who handled 36th-ranked Pleun Burgmans, 6-3, 6-3 at number one singles. It's the first win over a ranked opponent this year for the junior who moves her season record to 3-3.
The Huskies had a tough test in doubles action as Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu faced off against the no. 3 doubles team in the nation in Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger on court one with the Tigers edging out UW, 6-2. Miki Kobayashi and Grace Ysidora claimed a 6-4 win at number two doubles but Auburn was able to win the point on court three with a 6-4 decision over Julija Lukac and Angela Chen.
In singles action, the Dawgs got off to a solid start, claiming five first set wins and forcing three matches to three sets. Douglas-Miron's number one singles victory led the Huskies while Julija Lukac also picked up a 6-2, 7-6 win playing on court four. Lukac is now 5-2 on the season and has now won four straight.
Grace Ysidora, Miki Kobayashi and Capucine Gregoire took all three of their matches to three sets with gritty third-set performances before being edged by the Tigers.
The Huskies stay on the road next week and face San Diego State (Feb. 13) and San Diego (Feb. 14) before returning home to start a four-match home stead.
