No. 44 Huskies Suffer 7-0 Loss to No. 1 USC

SEATTLE – The No. 44 University of Washington women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to top-ranked USC Saturday afternoon at the Bill Quillian Tennis Stadium. The Huskies move to 10-7 on the season and 2-3 in Pac-12 play this year.

Doubles play was tightly contested as the day got started as Riko Shimizu and Miki Kobayashi battled against 19th-ranked Zoe Katz and Sabrina Santamaria before falling 8-6 on court one. The Trojans also claimed a win on court three to clinch the point. But the Huskies showed promise as Julija Lukac and Grace Ysidora were all tied up on court two with 15th-ranked Guilana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis at 7-7 when the point was called.

Singles action saw two of the six matches taken to the third set tiebreaker as the Huskies were also battling against top 70 opponents in four of the six spots. Capucine Gregoire, who was riding a nine-match winning streak heading into the day, took on Gabrielle DeSimone on court two and split sets with her 7-5 win in set two to bring up the 10-point tiebreak. DeSimone battled out an 11-9 win giving Gregoire her first loss since Feb. 8

Also forcing a third set was junior Julija Lukac who was playing against No. 49 Zoe Scandalis on court three. She dropped her first set 6-4 but rallied for a 7-6 win in the second set to force the 10-point tiebreak. Scandalis was able to respond though as she clinched the win with 10-3 advantage in the tiebreak.

Up next for the Dawgs is a road trip to California to take on No. 3 California on Friday, April 3 and No. 13 Stanford on Saturday, April 4.
