March 08, 2015 | Softball
SEATTLE -- The No. 19-ranked University of Washington softball team wrapped up its undefeated weekend, defeating Ohio State, 5-4 and Cal State Northridge, 4-2 on Sunday afternoon (March 8) at Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies went 6-0 in the Husky Classic, pushing their win streak to 11 straight games and improving to 25-4 on the season.
“This was great because we haven't been able to sweep a weekend yet this season,” head coach Heather Tarr said. “For this team to be able to do it on our last leg before conference, it's a cool thing and it feels good. We have to have some perspective on it, though. We know that going into conference play we are going to need to do the things we do best all of the time, not just some of the time. This is a small milestone for us to get through this point and now it's on to the next. We just have to keep improving.”
Sophomore Ali Aguilar headlined the Husky offensive efforts, going 4-for-7 on the day with two doubles and two runs scored. Aguilar now has 16 doubles on the season to lead the team. Junior Courtney Gano recorded a team-high three RBI on the day, including her 12th home run of the season.
Sophomore Casey Stangel (6-1) earned the victory against Ohio State, tossing a complete seven innings, allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out two. Six Husky batters tallied hits in the win, led by Gano's two RBI on two hits. Washington was discipline at the plate, drawing 11 walks in the game.
After back-to-back one-out singles by Taylor Van Zee and Aguilar, Gano hit an RBI single to plate Van Zee to give the Huskies the early 1-0 edge. Kelli Suguro then stepped to the plate and extended her hitting streak to 15 games with a single to score Gano.
The Buckeyes took advantage of a walk, two hits and an error to plate four runs in the second inning to take a 4-2 lead. Ohio State drew a lead off walk and an illegal pitch put the runner into scoring position. A bloop single then scored the first Buckeye run of the game before a three-run home run gave the visitors the lead, 4-2.
The Huskies chipped away at its deficit, scoring a run in the fifth. Aguilar hit her 15th double of the season to lead off and advanced to third on an illegal pitch. Suguro, Kimberlee Souza and Julia DePonte then drew three walks in a row to plate a run.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Kylee Lahners hit a lead off double and Gano tied the ball game with an RBI single. After Stangel drew a walk to load the bases, the Huskies drew their third walk of the inning to take the lead, 5-4.
The Husky defense retired the side in order in the seventh to earn their 24th win of the season.

After a quiet first two innings in the final game of the Husky Classic, CSUN hit a bunt-single and an RBI double to score the first run of the contest in the top of the third.
The Husky bats were kept quiet through the first three innings before Gano hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to lock the game at 1-1.
With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, Stangel led off with her 13th double of the season. Souza's bunt advanced pinch runner Kelly Burdick and Dani Braun was brought in to pinch hit. She delivered a clutch RBI single to put the Dawgs on top, 2-1. The Husky offense added insurance thanks to Jennie McNeill's hit which plated Braun and Aguilar's RBI single scored the fourth Husky run of the game. The Dawgs took a 4-1 lead heading to the final frame.
CSUN attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, stringing together three singles to open the frame. A fly out to center field scored a run.
