
GymDawgs Return Home To Host Western Michigan

SEATTLE – Following five road trips in the first two months of the season, UW gymnastic will spend the entire month of March in Seattle, beginning this Saturday, March 5, when the GymDawgs host Western Michigan. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. PT and will be streamed live. The meet will also serve as the GymDawgs' faculty appreciation night.
“We are looking forward to competing at home in front of our fans and our main goal is to put together another complete meet,” head coach Joanne Bowers said. “We're excited to be able to honor our faculty. There are so many people who support our program and we want to show how much we appreciate them.”
The GymDawgs are coming off a number of individually great performances at Arizona, where senior captain Allison Northey won the all-around with a 39.500. She also won three event titles and four top-3 finishes to earn Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week honors. Fellow captain Kaitlyn Duranczyk won the bars title, her third of the season, to complete the event sweep for the GymDawgs.
The Huskies are ranked No. 29 in the nation with a 195.345 regional qualifying score (RQS) and a 195.147 average. Western Michigan is ranked No. 46 with a 194.075 RQS and a 194.059 average.

Scouting the Broncos
The Broncos are ranked No. 46 overall and are coming off a 193.600 in a four-team meet. Western Michigan's team high is a 195.275. The Broncos are ranked No. 37 on vault, No. 49 on bars, No. 42 on beam and No. 44 on floor. Anna Corbett is the Broncos leader in the all-around with a 39.045 RQS.
UW Event Previews – Ranking: No. 29, RQS: 195.345, Season-High: 196.450
Vault, No. 28, RQS: 48.880 – Northey has led the Huskies on vault this season, with seven top-3 finishes and one vault title. She has an RQS of 9.825. Hailey Burleson, Alex Yacalis and Joslyn Goings each have top-3 finishes this year, and Emily Liddle has been providing consistent scores as of late.
Bars, No. 38, RQS: 48.735 – Duranczyk leads the GymDawgs with a 9.855 and is ranked No. 41 in the nation on the event. She has three bars titles this season, and is tied with Northey with five top-3 finishes. Burleson, Goings and Schaefer also top-3 finishes this season.
Beam, No. 25, RQS: 48.920 – Northey is the No. 21 gymnast on beam in the country with a 9.865 RQS. She has four beam titles this season and six top-3 finishes. Goings is ranked No. 45 with a 9.845 RQS and has one beam title this season and four top-3 finishes. Duranczyk and Stowe have each posted one top-3 finish. Freshman Malory Rose has been incredibly consistent this season, with scores over 9.75 in six of eight meets this season.
Floor, No. 26, RQS: 48.995 – The Huskies have their highest RQS on floor, led by Northey who is ranked No. 46. She has three floor titles and seven top-3 finishes. Yacalis, Schaefer and Faith Morrison each have top-3 finishes this season.
All-Around – Northey is the GymDawgs highest-ranked all-arounder at No. 16 in the nation with a 39.300 RQS. She has three all-around titles this season and five top-3 finishes. Northey posted a personal-best 39.550 at Utah. Joslyn Goins and Hailey Burleson have each competed in the all-around this season.
Last Time Out
Washington posted a 195.350 at Arizona, an overall disappointing team score, but saw standout individual performances from Northey and Duranczyk. Northey posted the second-best all-around score in her career with a 39.500 to win the all-around title and won vault, beam and floor titles. She also finished in third on bars. Duranczyk finished the event title sweep for the Huskies with her third bars title of the season.
Next Up for the GymDawgs
The GymDawgs face a quick turnaround with a meet against crosstown rival Seattle Pacific University on Monday, March 7. The meet will be streamed live and live stats will be available.
Notes:
- The GymDawgs have just one senior on the 2016 squad, two-time All-Pac-12 First Team all-arounder Allison Northey. Fellow senior Sheridan Metcalf is serving as a student coach for the GymDawgs this season.
- UW's freshman class consists of three gymnasts: Malory Rose (Orlando, Fla.), Kristyn Hoffa (San Marcos, Calif.) and Monica Riley (Irving, Texas).
- UW head coach Joanne Bowers is in her 10th season with the Huskies.
- The Huskies added assistant coach Stephen Buckner, who was previously serving as the strength and conditioning coach at the University of Alabama. He helped the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships in 2011 and 2012 when he was on the staff. Former assistant coach Elise Ray was promoted to associate head coach. The addition of Buckner and promotion of Ray followed the departure of former UW associate head coach David McCreary, who is now an assistant at the University of Arizona.
- The Huskies took seventh place at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships with a 196.000, their highest score at the conference championships in the last four years. UW gymnastics team-high in 2015 was 196.600, recorded at UC Davis.
