Dawgs Sweep Sacramento State To Finish Weekend
April 10, 2016 | Beach Volleyball
SEATTLE – Washington finished up its opening weekend of beach volleyball with a sweep of Sacramento State to improve to 2-1 on the young season. The Huskies beat the Hornets for the second year in a row, playing at the Livermore Community Park in Folsom, Calif.
Senior Lianna Sybeldon, a native of Folsom, and sophomore Bailey Tanner prevailed in the tightest match of the day, beating Lexie Skalbeck and Lana Brown at the No. 3 spot, 21-10, 15-21, and 17-15 in the decisive third set. Also winning in a third set, with less drama, was Melanie Wade and Justice Magraw, as they came through 15-5 over Meadows/Gathright after winning the first set 21-18 but dropping the second, 22-24.
The other three matches were all won convincingly by the Dawgs. Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray were 21-14, 21-11 winners in the No. 1 match over Lovett/Cannon. Cassie Strickland and Courtney Schwan beat Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley at No. 2, 21-8, 21-11. The match opened with a 21-13, 21-12 win at No. 5 for freshmen Destiny Julye and Lindsay Chalmers over the Hornets pair of Kurtz and Murdock. Julye also had a win in the exhibition match teaming with Jade Finau.
“We didn't know anything really about Sacramento State, but we did a good job serving and passing and taking care of the easy plays, and then the girls were able to adjust as the match went on,” said Head Coach Jonathan Winder.
The Huskies will now look forward to a first ever home match, next Saturday at 2:30 out at Alki Beach, where they will host the Oregon Ducks. Coach Winder was happy with the progress UW made over this first weekend.
“We got our feet dirty for the first time and got to know our partners and it had been a year since we had played so it was great for them to get reacquainted with it,” said Winder. “We have a better idea now where we need to improve as we play Oregon, and then see some of the top teams in Hawaii and at the Pac-12 tournament.”
