Huskies Fall One Short To ULM In Hawaii

HONOLULU - The Husky beach volleyball team wrapped its stay in Hawaii with a match against another experienced squad, taking the top two matches but ultimately coming up one win shy in a 3-2 defeat to Louisiana-Monroe. Washington held its own in all three matches at the Outrigger Resorts Aloha Invitational, led by Cassie Strickland and Courtney Schwan who went 4-1 together over three days.
The top two matches today against Louisiana-Monroe were rematches from the pairs tournament on Thursday. The first time around, Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones lost both sets to ULM's Hope Pawlik and Taylor Zaeseke, but today the Dawgs turned the tables. Jones and Scambray had a 21-14, 21-16 win, showing their continued improvement.
Strickland and Schwan saw Swartz and Simpson of Monroe for the second time as well. The Husky pair had a straight set win on Thursday, but after a 21-18 first set win for Strickland and Schwan, Swartz and Simpson rallied to force a third set with a 21-18 win of their own. But Strickland and Schwan took control of the third and won going away, 15-8.
The Huskies had two close calls at the third and fifth matches that could have swung the match in their favor. Despite playing just their second match together, Lianna Sybeldon and Justice Magraw continued to show some good chemistry, winning the first set, but ultimately falling a few points short against ULM's No. 3 pair, Shearer/Driver, 18-21, 21-16, 15-10.
At No. 5, freshmen Destiny Julye and Lindsay Chalmers went to extra points in set one but fell short, 21-23, and their push for a third set was two points shy as well, 19-21. Louisiana-Monroe also had a 21-10, 21-11 win over Jade Finau and Katy Beals at the No. 4 spot.
