SEATTLE – The Class of 2016 for the University of Washington Gymnastics program just got stronger as it announced the signing of Evanni Roberson, a standout from the Emerald City Gymnastics in Redmond, Wash. Roberson will join Madison Copiak, Michaela Nelson and Maya Washington next season on Montlake, head coach Joanne Bowers announced.
"Evanni is a local gymnast that we have gotten to know well through many clinics in the past few years,” said Bowers. “We knew she was special and expect her to have a great collegiate career. She has proven that she has what it takes to compete at a high level and the best part is---she is still learning. Evanni is a powerful athlete with a high level of difficulty on every event. Her positive attitude and work ethic make her an easy fit for our program. We're thrilled to have her join this already strong class.”
Roberson has had an extremely successful gymnastics career so far, placing 19th at Nationals in 2015 and was first in the All-Around at Regionals the same year. Most recently, Roberson finished first on Floor, Beam and Bars, and in the All-Around (38.100), at the Level 10 Region 2 Championships. She also placed 17th at the Nastia Liukin Cup in March. She will soon compete at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Fort Worth, May 7-8.
"I chose UW because it was an amazing opportunity to be a part of the Pac-12 at a phenomenal school,” said Roberson. “The beliefs and values at UW are the same as what I have grown up with which is extremely important to me. The gymnastics program is amazing and everyone that is a part of it welcomed me with open arms, which is what ultimately made my decision a "no brainer".
Her off the mat accolades are just as impressive as she is a three-time Elizabeth Wesley Merit Award Recipient, an honor roll member at Emerald Ridge High School and a representative on the student counsel. She is the daughter of Kari Jacobs and is coached by Brian Muenz and Jackie Bellmer at Emerald City Gymnastics Academy.
