April 03, 2016 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – Senior Allison Northey posted a 39.275 in the all-around to finish in fourth place at the NCAA Regional meet on Saturday, April 2, in Salt Lake City, and will advance to the NCAA Championships April 15-17 in Fort Worth, Texas.
“It's been a goal of mine to reach nationals in my collegiate career, so this is really exciting for me,” Northey said. “I am grateful for the chance to represent my team. I really wouldn't have had this chance without their support.”
Northey finished in fourth overall in the all-around and advances because she took second place out of gymnasts who are not on already advancing teams. Utah and UCLA finished in first and second place, respectively, to qualify for nationals, and the top-2 all-arounders outside of Utah and UCLA qualify as well.
“We are so proud of Allie and all the work she's put into her career,” UW head coach Joanne Bowers said. “She has earned this opportunity through her work ethic and attitude over the past four years. This is a fitting way for her to finish her collegiate career.”
This is the first appearance at the NCAA Championships for Northey and the first for any GymDawg since 2013. Northey also tied for first on beam with a 9.9, her sixth beam title of the season.
The GymDawgs posted a team score of 195.825, just .550 behind second-place UCLA, to finish in third place and end a very promising season.
“We are proud of the performance our team put forth today,” Bowers said. “Really, we couldn't have asked for more. They came out and did their jobs. We were a bit unlucky and had a few things go against us, but we were proud of this team for fighting, like they've done all year. They've gotten better through adversity and this season has given us a strong foundation to build on going forward.”
