SEATTLE – Incoming standout freshman Madison Copiak (Calgary, AB) has been named an alternate for Canada's Olympic gymnastics team and will head to Rio to represent her country.
Copiak has international experience competing for the Canadian National Team in both 2015 and 2014. At the 2015 World Championships, she helped Canada to a sixth place finish and was key on the 2014 Pan American Championship team that helped Canada qualify a full squad for Toronto in 2015. Copiak also finished fourth in the all-around at the 2015 Elite Canada meet.
She is one of two alternates on the seven-person squad that will start competing on Aug. 7 in Rio in hopes of advancing to the team final on Aug. 9. The individual all-around finals are on Aug. 11 with the remaining event finals taking place Aug. 14-16.
Copiak is part of a stellar incoming class for first-year head coach Elise Ray. She will join Michaela Nelson (Montgomery Village, Md.), Maya Washington (San Jose, Calif.), Evanni Roberson (Redmond, Wash.) and the rest of the GymDawgs on Montlake this season.
