Seven Huskies Score In Double-Figures In 93-67 Win Over Portland

SEATTLE --- Washington had a program-record seven players score in double-figures and used a big second-half to cruise to a 93-67 victory over Portland on Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Huskies improve to 4-3 on the season, picking up back-to-back victories for the first time this year. The loss drops the Pilots to 3-4.
All seven of Washington's 10 players scored in the game with seven going into double-figures. Leading the way were sophomore Mai-Loni Henson and Amber Melgoza, who each poured in 14 points with Henson recording the team's first double-double of the year by adding 10 rebounds.
Freshmen Kierra Collier, Alexis Griggsby and Missy Peterson each contributed 12 points in the game with Griggsby and Peterson scoring all of their points in the second half. Senior Jenna Moser was the seventh player to reach double-figures in the game, hitting a tough jumper in the lane with 1:23 left to give her 11 while freshman Khayla Rooks scored 10 in the game.
Washington took over a relatively close contest with a big third quarter, outscoring Portland 32-19 in the period. After a couple of quick baskets by Portland to open the quarter, the Huskies responded with an 18-2 run to turn a six-point game into a commanding 58-35 lead midway through the third. Washington would allow the Pilots to get no closer than 20 the rest of the way.
Washington opened the game with back-to-back threes from Moser and used a 9-0 run to take a 12-4 lead three minutes in. Portland closed to within four with a quick run over the next two minutes and again trailed by just four in the final minute before Hannah Johnson hit a turn-around jumper in the paint in the waning seconds to put UW up 22-16 at the break.
After the Huskies hit a free throw to open the second, Portland scored six-straight to pull within one at 23-22. Washington snapped its scoreless streak with a bucket by Rooks at the 6:45 mark which triggered the Huskies' offense to a 16-5 run over the next six minutes. Collier had six points over that run with Melgoza adding five as Washington headed to halftime with a 39-29 lead.
The Huskies received solid contribution from their bench, outscoring Portland 50-27 in bench points. Washington also had a season-high 25 assists on 38 made field goals and forced 26 steals. The Huskies out-rebounded Portland 43-29 including pulling down 21 offensive rebounds and turning them into 29 second-chance points. In the pivotal third quarter, Washington had eight offensive rebounds and turned them into 16 second-chance points--accounting for half of its total points in the period.
Prior to Sunday's game, the most Huskies to score in double-figures had been six, last done in an 80-67 win vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 13, 2013. Since 1990, the Huskies have had six players score in double-figures five times.
The Huskies head back on the road for their next game, traveling to face Boise State on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. PT (6:00 p.m. MT).
