Ostrem, Menzies Lead Huskies Past Cal, 2-1
October 18, 2018 | Men's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. --- Freshman Charlie Ostrem recorded his first collegiate goal and Scott Menzies added the eventual match-winner as Washington picked up a big three points with a 2-1 win at California in a Pac-12 match on Thursday afternoon.
Β
The Huskies pick up their second-straight road win and their third win in their last four matches overall, improving to 8-6-0 on the season and to 3-3-0 in the conference. The Golden Bears drop to 5-7-2 and to 1-5-0 in the Pac-12.
Β
The teams met for the second time in a week, though both games ended with the Huskies dominating on offense and pulling out a one-goal victory. In this match, Washington outshot Cal 19-6 after 19-4 in the Huskies' 1-0 double-overtime win last Thursday in Seattle.
Β
In the 20th minute, a pair of Husky freshmen got the Huskies on the board. Dylan Teves carried the ball down the middle before sliding a pass to Charlie Ostrem just inside the box. Ostrem then snapped a shot to the right corner to net his first collegiate goal and give Washington the early lead.
Cal had its best chance of the first half in the 43rd minute as a run down the right side and cross into the box gave Jonathan Estrada a great look at goal with a point-blank look. However, the shot ended up deflecting off his teammate, going high in the air and punched over the bar by Bryce Logan. Β
Β
Washington added its second goal in the 61st minute on a bit of a broken play. Kyle Coffee had the ball on the left side, turned and sent a quick cross back toward the goal. The ball took a slight deflection, but Menzies was right there, getting a head on it and sending it toward the far post and in.
Cal would answer back in the 65th minute as Shinya Kadono gathered a loose ball in the box and fired home his Pac-12-best 11th goal of the season to once again make it a one-goal game.
Β
But while the Bears pressed late in the contest, the Husky defense held strong and was able to hold Cal to just two shots over the final 25 minutes en route to the victory.
Β
Washington's defensive dominance was especially impressive considering the Huskies were without their two regular center backs: Quentin Pearson and Ethan Bartlow. Pearson missed his first match of the season due to card accumulation while Bartlow sat out due to injury. In their stead, redshirt freshman Freddy Kleeman made his first collegiate start and redshirt junior Ryan DeGroot earned his first start of the season.
"Great to see new faces stepping up and doing well," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "We believe in our depth and today showed why."
Β
The Huskies play their final road game of the regular season on Sunday, heading across the Bay to face No. 12 Stanford in a rematch of last Sunday's 3-2 double-overtime loss in Seattle. Kick off is slated for 3:00 pm and the match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
