Huskies Roll Past UCLA, 2-0
October 25, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Washington scored a pair of second half goals against 10-man UCLA to earn a big 2-0 victory over the Bruins on a rainy Thursday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies improve to 9-7-0 overall and back to .500 in conference at 4-4-0. The Bruins saw their four-match winning streak snapped as they fall to 9-5-0, 4-2-0 in the conference.
The game was battled for in the midfield through the first half with just a total of six shots with five coming from Washington. But things changed in the second half when UCLA's Joab Santoyo was shown a straight red card for a kick to the head of Corban Anderson while the two were on the ground.
Washington finally broke through in the 74th minute as Anderson was pushed from behind in the box to give the Huskies a penalty shot in the 74th minute. UW's leading scorer Scott Menzies stepped up and converted, beating the keeper with a shot to the right corner for his eighth goal of the season and give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes later, the Huskies added a big insurance goal. After Blake Bodily sent a corner kick to Kyle Coffee at the top, right corner of the box, Coffee sent a perfect pass right to the middle where Freddy Kleeman and Dylan Teves each took a shot. The ball ricocheted off the near post and rolled across the goal line, banging off the far post and going in. While Kleemann was originally credited with the goal, after review, Teves was credited with his fourth goal of the season.
The Huskies' defense was impressive throughout the match, limiting the Bruins to just three total shots with none coming on goal. Meanwhile, Washington recorded 14 shots, putting seven on frame.
"We talked about at halftime that the only place you can win a game is on the scoreboard. We had been winning games between the 18's, but not in those other areas. We took care of the whole 120 yards today with a shutout on one side and two goals on the other," said UW Head Coach Jamie Clark. "Our defense was tough! It was nice for Freddy to step in for (Quentin Pearson). We are a deep team and we can rotate some people around depending on health. We know we are 16-17 deep so we can play different ways."
Washington returns to action on Sunday, hosting San Diego State University in a Pac-12 match beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Husky Soccer Stadium.
