Huskies Lose 1-0 At UCLA
October 04, 2018 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES --- Washington played solid defense and outshot UCLA but couldn't find the back of the net, losing 1-0 in a Pac-12 contest on Thursday night at Annenburg Stadium.
The Huskies drop to 5-5-0 on the season and to 0-2-0 in Pac-12 play on the heels of their fourth-straight defeat while UCLA moves to 6-4-0 and 2-1-0 in the conference.
UCLA tallied the loan goal of the match in the 22nd minute, taking advantage of a hand ball call just outside of the box. Milan Illoski curled the shot around the wall and into the far corner of the net to give the Bruins and early lead.
The home side had a great chance to open the scoring a few minutes earlier, earning a penalty kick in the 21st minute as a Husky defender fouled a UCLA player just in front of the goal mouth. Illoski stepped up to take the kick but sent it well wide. It was the first PK attempt allowed by the Huskies since October 26, 2017 at San Diego State. Washington still hasn't allowed a PK goal in 60 matches dating back to October 4, 2015.
UW got an unlucky break in the 39th minute as a cross by Bodily was knocked down by the arm of a Bruin defender. The referee signaled for a penalty kick, but after talking to his linesman on the opposite side of the pitch, waived off the PK saying there had been no hand ball.
The Huskies pressed for the equalizer early in the second half. Just two minutes in, Blake Bodily had a great chance, getting a nice through ball from Corban Anderson and taking it toward goal. But the UCLA keeper came off his line to make a sliding stop before Bodily could get a shot off.
In the final 10 minutes, the Huskies nearly tied the match on a few occasions. In the 84th minute, Washington had back-to-back corners with both attempts finding the heads of Husky attackers, but being blocked away, the second missing wide.
Washington took one final shot in the 89th minute. After a foul just over the midfield stripe, Ethan Bartlow sent a free kick into the goal box where two Huskies looked ready to head it into the goal. However, the keeper got a hand on it, punching it away from danger as the Bruins ran out the clock.
Scott Menzies led the Huskies with four shots in the game with Bodily adding two. Menzies had half of Washington's four shots on goal with Bodily and Andrew Conwell each adding one.
Saif Kerawala made six saves in goal for the Huskies, though the junior suffered his fifth loss of the season. UCLA netminder Justin Garces recorded four saves for the Bruins.
Washington looks to get back in the win column on Sunday, concluding the road trip at San Diego State at 11:30 a.m.
