Huskies' Season Ends In Heartbreaking Fashion
November 15, 2018 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE --- Despite dominating its NCAA First Round match through 110 minutes and posting its fifth-straight shutout, Washington's season came to a heartbreaking end as Lipscomb advanced 5-4 on penalties after the teams played to a scoreless draw on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies wrap up their season with an overall mark of 12-7-1 while the Bison's season continues with the team holding a 9-9-1 record. The game marked the fourth overtime game for the Huskies in six NCAA Tournament games with three ending in shootouts.
Washington played an impressive game offensively, outshooting Lipscomb 14-5 including a 9-2 edge in the second half alone. But despite a number of incredible chances, Lipscomb goalkeeper Chris Zappia was there turn the Huskies away.
The Huskies had four great chances at goal just after halftime as freshman Dylan Teves cracked a shot that was saved with a follow-up by senior Scott Menzies turned aside. After a corner kick, Teves once again had another great chance at goal only to see Zappia make a great diving save. The ball went out to freshman Ethan Bartlow, who cracked a shot through three defenders but saw it saved again by Zappia.
The Bison's best chance came in the second overtime when a turnover on the backline created a chance for the visitors. After the attacker beat UW goalie Saif Kerawala with a nice move, Bartlow came sliding across and kicked the ball out of danger before it could find the net. Other than that, the Huskies didn't allow Lipscomb a good look at goal.
Kerawala posted his second-straight shutout but did not have to make a save in the contest.
After the game officially ended in a draw, the teams headed to PKs to determine which team advanced. Both teams elected to bring in different goalkeepers with Bryce Logan being called upon by the Huskies and Lipscomb going with Luke Wilson.
Lipscomb took the first kick, but Logan made an impressive diving save to get things off to a good start with the Huskies converting to take the early advantage after one round. Both teams would convert in the next two rounds with Wilson making a save on a Husky attempt to tie the score up after four rounds. Both teams would convert in the fifth round as the teams moved into round six. Lipscomb would convert its chance, but Wilson made a save again to give the Bison the victory.
Washington's defense was impressive again as the Huskies posted their fifth-straight shutout, extending its scoreless streak to 486 minutes. UW's defense hasn't allowed a goal since October 21 and held Lipscomb's high-powered offense to just five shots in the game. The Huskies will open the 2019 season looking to extend its longest shutout stretch since the 1996 season--just two games shy of the program record.
