March 24, 2018 | Beach Volleyball
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The 19th-ranked Huskies dropped a pair of duals against top-20 opponents today as their SoCal swing continued at the Pac-12 South Invitational in Santa Monica. Playing at Ocean Park Beach, the Huskies (3-4) fell in a 4-1 match to 14th-ranked Stanford and then dropped a 5-0 decision to 16th-ranked California.
Match 1
All five matches were able to play simultaneously at Ocean Park Beach today. Stanford grabbed the lead with a win at No. 2 where Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye couldn't get on track against Morgan Hentz and Amelia Smith, falling 21-8, 21-13. The remaining four matches were much tighter but UW couldn't force third sets to turn things around.
At No. 1, Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner nearly forced a third set against Plummer/Villapando but ultimately fell, 21-13, 22-20. The Huskies got their first point then at No. 3 where Carly DeHoog and Shayne McPherson defeated Bowen/Formico, 21-14, 21-15.
But Stanford clinched at No. 5 as Anderson/Keefe held off Kara Bajema and Emma Calle, 21-18, 21-18. At No. 4, Natalie Robinson and Anna Crabtree lost a tight first set, 22-20, to Chang/Raquel and then lost the second set, 21-16, to make the final score 4-1.
Match 2
Returning to action just an hour after finishing the previous match, the Dawgs faced a tough Cal squad just coming off a 3-2 loss to No. 4 USC.
The Huskies made a switch with their four and five lineups, but the Bears got straight set wins at both spots to take the early 2-0 lead. Bajema/Calle lost at No. 4 to Merino/Schafer of Cal, 21-15, 21-15. Crabtree and Robinson at No. 5 fell by a 21-16, 21-9 count to Campbell/Micheletti.
The top three matches were close but all went Cal's way today. Anderson and Gardiner lost a nailbiter set one, 23-21, to Inman/Mirkovic and Cal closed it out with a 21-16 second set win to clinch the dual.
At Nos. 2 and 3, both Husky pairs lost their first sets but came back with second set wins, but were unable to carry that momentum into third set victories. Schwan and Julye fell at No. 2, 21-17, 18-21, 15-9 to Cal's Gaffney/Lindahl. DeHoog and McPherson couldn't quite complete the 2-0 day as they lost 15-12 in the third set to Bark/Dueck at No. 3.
The Huskies will wrap up their week tomorrow with another big challenge against No. 2 UCLA followed by a showdown with Arizona State.
