Huskies Win Season Opener Against Hawaii 4-1

HONOLULU, HI --- The Washington women's tennis team begin the dual match season with a victory over Hawaii at the Hawaii Tennis Complex on Friday, winning 4-1. The final two singles matches of the match were not finished due to rain.
"I'm super proud of how this team competed today, said junior Kat Kopcalic. "I think we all had some nerves we had to fight through but we all went out there and just focused on what we needed to do. There was so much great energy from everyone which I think helped us a lot. It's so much fun competing with such a great group of girls and I can't wait to see where this season takes us."

Sophomore Vanessa Wong and freshman Zoey Weil, who was playing in her first match as a Husky got UW off to a good start winning their match 6-1 over Dolakova/Sela. Senior Stacey Fung and freshman Nika Zupancic clinched the doubles point by taking down Melounova/Resma 6-4.

Senior Kenadi Hance and junior Natsuho Arakawa were down 4-5 at the time of the Huskies earning the doubles point.

In singles play, the Huskies won three out of the four completed singles matches. Wong beat Sela 6-4, 6-1 to give the Huskies their first singles point. Kopcalic made quick work Dolakova 6-4, 6-4. Arakawa won against 6-1, 6-4 over Resma to give the Huskies the match clinching fourth point.

Senior Kenadi Hance lost to Pits 6-4, 2-6, 5-10. Fung won the first set of her match 6-4 against and was tied up at 6-6 in the second when the match was cancelled due to weather. Zupancic won the first set 6-1 before falling in the second 3-6. She was down 3-4 in the third at the time when the match was called.
"I truly enjoyed playing with this amazing group of girls who are so lovable and talented," said Arakawa. "On and off the court I think being on this team helps me to play well in matches. I couldn't help myself to smile and enjoy every point of the match. I just want to say I love this team!"

The Huskies will remain in Hawaii for the next two days to compete in the Weinman Foundation Invitational. The 12th ranked Ole Miss Rebels will also be competing in the event alongside the Huskies and Hawaii.
