Kopcalic Advances to Quarterfinals of ITA NW Regional

PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Washington senior Katarina Kopcalic picked up a pair of victories on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2019 ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford University.
Kopcalic opened the day with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win over Portland's Neli Sunjic in the round of 32, then defeated Melisa Ates from Washington State 6-4, 7-5 to becoming the Huskies' lone representative in the quarterfinal. Her quarterfinal match on Sunday is against Stanford's Janice Shin.
On the doubles side, three of the four doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 with wins on Saturday. Natsuho Arakawa and Vanessa Wong defeated Melisa Ates and Hikaru Sato from Washington State 8-5 to advance to play on Sunday. Sedona Gallagher and Kopcalic cruised past Emily Ackerman and Susanne Boyden from Cal Poly 8-2 while Ashley Chang and Delara Zamini defeated Georgia Townsend and Danielle Zamora from Pacific 8-6.
On the singles side, one of the best matches of the day came from Nika Zupancic, who faced off against the tournament's No. 3 seed and No. 30th ranked Emily Arbuthnott from Stanford, winning a tight first set 7-6 (3) before losing the next two sets 6-2, 6-0.
Arakawa also picked up a quick 6-1, 6-4 win over Dohee Lee from Pacific in the round of 32, but lost a tough three-set match in the round of 16 against the No. 6 seed and No. 42 ranked Anna Bright from Cal 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Matches resume on Sunday with doubles matches beginning at 10:00 am and singles competition starting at 12:00 p.m.
