Rooks Scores Career as Huskies Beat Iona 65-34
November 28, 2019 | Women's Basketball
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --- Khayla Rooks scored a career-high 17 points on the back of five three-pointers and the Washington defense once again flexed its muscles in a 65-34 win over Iona College in the first game of the Puerto Rico Clasico on Thursday morning.
The Huskies improve to 4-1 on the season with their third-straight win, holding their opponent to fewer than 50 points for the fourth time in five games. The Gaels fall to 1-4.
Washington's defense has been solid all season and played a near-perfect game against Iona. The Huskies limited the Gaels to just 34 points—the fewest the Huskies have allowed since 2010 when they beat San Jose State 49-27. Washington ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing just 50 points per game coming in, dropping that to 48.6 after today's game.
The Huskies limited the Gaels to just 26.8% shooting in the game and forced 19 turnovers as well. Washington has forced at least 17 turnovers in all five games this year. In addition, Iona was unable to record more than single digits in any quarter.
"I was really proud of our defensive effort," said Head Coach Jody Wynn. "I think we let up on a few possessions but other than that, we were dialed in. We contained the ball pretty well. I was really proud of our depth--our bench. Haley Van Dyke moved well without the ball and did well, playing really well on her birthday! And Khayla Rooks was on fire today. It was great to see her do well today."
Rooks caught fire in the third quarter, connecting on back-to-back threes to get Washington going and scoring 11 of the team's 19 points in the frame. She finished with five from beyond the arc in the game, eclipsing her previous career-best of three which she had done three times before. She also established a new career high in scoring with 17 points, reaching double-figures for the second-straight game.
"My teammates kept finding me open on the three and I just let it fly," said Rooks. "They keep instilling confidence in me in practice and in games to keep shooting since I've kind of been off the last couple of games. It was nice to get my rhythm back."
Rooks becomes Washington's fifth leading scorer through its first five games of the season.
"It might not always show up on the stat sheet, but we are making things happen on both sides of the ball," said Wynn. "This is a testament to how unselfish our team is and its great to see."
Amber Melgoza and Haley Van Dyke each added 12 points for the Huskies while Missy Peterson contributed eight.
Washington returns to action on Friday, taking on Howard University in the second of three games at the Clasico. Tip-off is slated for 9:00 a.m. PT.
