Washington Cruises Past San Francisco to Open Husky Classic

SEATTLE --- Haley Van Dyke scored a game-high 14 points and Khayla Rooks added 11 as Washington cruised to a 73-54 win over the University of San Francisco in the first game of the 25th Husky Classic Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

The Husky defense again played well, forcing 23 turnovers and holding San Francisco to just 54 points on 39.7 percent shooting.
Van Dyke was one point off her career-high, recording 14 points including 11 in the first half. She added a team-best six rebounds and had four assists in the game. Rooks scored 11 including eight in the second half and also had six rebounds.
Washington opened up an early lead thanks to a quick 8-0 run with Van Dyke getting a second-chance bucket to take a 12-4 lead midway through the quarter. The teams would battle back and forth the rest of the quarter with Melgoza hitting a layup with 17 seconds left to give the Huskies a 19-12 lead after 10 minutes.
Still leading by seven two minutes into the second quarter, the Huskies caught fire on both sides of the court, using a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes to blow the game open. During that stretch, six different Washington players scored, and the Huskies forced six turnovers en route to 37-19 halftime lead.
The Dons came out strong to start the third quarter, using a 9-0 run over the first four minutes to cut the Husky lead to single digits at 37-28. But Washington would respond in a big way, using a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of the to that point at 50-30 with 4:10 left. During that run, the Huskies would hit three-pointers on three-consecutive possessions with Missy Peterson, Mai-Loni Henson and JaQuaya Miller all connecting. The teams would go back and forth the rest of the way until a tough offensive rebound and put back by Amber Melgoza made it a 54-33 game after three.
The Huskies caught fire from beyond the arc in the fourth, draining five three-pointers including the first career basket for walk-on Callie Lind with 2:16 left in the game. Washington, which led by as many as 26 in the fourth would settle for the 19-point win.
The UW bench came through in a big way, scoring 48 of the team's 73 points and 26 of the 37 rebounds. Darcy Rees, who came off the bench for the Huskies, had eight points while Ali Bamberger had seven. Miller and Melgoza—both starters in the game—had seven points each with Melgoza adding five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Washington closes out the Husky Classic on Saturday, facing Vanderbilt at 4:00 p.m.
