
Cold Shooting Dooms Huskies in 62-50 Loss to Hawaii

SEATTLE --- The shots were just not falling for Washington on Sunday night as the Huskies lost a tough 62-50 contest against Hawaii at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Washington which falls to 6-2 on the season.
Mai-Loni Henson led the Huskies with 14 points and added five rebounds while fellow senior Amber Melgoza poured in 12 points and had nine boards including seven on the offensive end. But Washington would connect on just 22.6 percent from the field in the game including a just 13.8 percent from three-point range in the loss.
Hawaii jumped out to a quick lead with a 9-0 run over the first two minutes. The Huskies snapped the streak with a pair of free throws by Khayla Rooks with Amber Melgoza hitting a tough runner for the first field go the game for Washington at the 4:12 mark. The teams would exchange buckets the rest of the way, but the Huskies would trail 15-6 after one. Washington would connect on 2-of-17 in the first 10 minutes.
The Huskies caught fire early in the second quarter, opening on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 16-15 with 6:29 to go. But Hawaii wouldn't go away, answering with a 7-0 run of its own over the next two minutes and headed to the locker room with a 27-22 lead. After taking the lead, Washington finished the quarter hitting just 2-of-14 the rest of the way and shot 20.5% over the first half.
In the third quarter, the Huskies again closed the gap with an early run, outscoring Hawaii 7-4 to make it 31-29 at the 7:25 mark. But Washington again went cold from the field and the Rainbow Wahine took advantage, using a 9-0 run to take a 40-29 lead with 2:51 to go. Mai-Loni Henson got a tough offensive rebound and putback to end the run, but Hawaii would hold a 43-33 lead after three quarters.
Hawaii opened the fourth with back-to-back three-pointers to go up 16 with 9:06 to go, but the Huskies would answer with a quick 7-0 run to bring it back to within single digits at 49-40 with 7:10 remaining. But again, Hawaii would respond, using a 7-1 run over the next four minutes to go up 56-41 at the 3:33 mark.
Washington wouldn't go away quietly, though, as Ali Bamberger hit a tough runner followed by a Hawaii turnover and a three from Melgoza to make it 56-46 at 2:54. The Huskies were forcing turnovers and keeping the Rainbow Wahine to just four points—all on free throws—the rest of the way, but couldn't capitalize in the loss.
Washington heads back on the road for its next game, taking on the University of San Diego at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2:00 pm.
