
Huskies Fall 77-56 at No. 5 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. --- Amber Melgoza scored 17 while Darcy Rees and Quay Miller added 12 each as Washington hung with No. 5 Stanford before the Cardinal pulled away in the fourth quarter as the Huskies lost 77-56 in a Pac-12 games Sunday afternoon at Maples Pavilion.
The Huskies (10-4, 2-1 Pac-12), were tied with the Cardinal (13-1, 2-0 Pac-12) at halftime, but struggled shooting in the second half as Stanford pulled away for the win. It was the first loss away from home for Washington this season and just its second in its last 11 such games.
Melgoza scored 11 of her 17 in the second half including scoring seven in the third quarter. Rees connected on 3-of 5 from three-point range, scoring 12 points to tie her season high. Freshman Quay Miller also matched her season-high with nine points while adding five rebounds in the game.
Things did not go well for the Huskies to start the game as Stanford jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead over the first three minutes while forcing four turnovers on UW's first five possessions. But the Huskies would battle back, using a quick 9-2 run to pull back to within two points at 11-9 on a bucket by Quay Miller at the 4:11 mark. The teams would exchange buckets with Stanford leading by four after one.
After a rough first three minutes, the Huskies would outscore Stanford 15-10 and force seven turnovers over the final seven minutes of the quarter.
In the second quarter, Washington opened on an 8-2 run, taking its first lead of the game on a three-pointer by Haley Van Dyke at the 5:30 mark. The Huskies would fall back behind by three as Stanford caught fire, using a 6-2 run to take a 30-27 lead with 1:23 to go. But Washington closed out the half with a three-pointer by Rees—her second of the quarter—to tie the game at the break.
Stanford would open the third quarter strong, using an 11-3 run to open up a 43-35 lead just over four minutes in. The Huskies responded with a quick 4-0 run to make it a four-point game again, but the Cardinal would answer with 12 of the next 17 points to take a 13-point lead late in the quarter. Missy Peterson would make it a 10-point game by hitting a three at the buzzer as the Huskies trailed 57-47 after three.
Another quick start by Stanford saw the home side score the first seven points of the fourth and cruise from there, outscoring the Huskies 20-9 in the period to pull away for the win.
Washington returns home to begin a three-game homestand Saturday, hosting Washington State in the second game of the Boeing Apple Cup Series at 12:30 p.m.
