February 23, 2020 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE --- Playing its first home match since the first of the month, Washington picked up its seventh home victory with a 4-1 win over Illinois on Sunday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
The Huskies improve to 9-3 on the season with the win and move to 7-1 at home this year.
Washington lost the doubles point in what turned out to be an epic battle at the No. 1 spot. Illinois won the first match with a 6-2 victory at No. 2 before Sedona Gallagher and Zoey Weil recorded a 6-4 win at No.3 to even things up. At No. 1, Vanessa Wong and Natsuho Arakawa battled hard with the Illinois tandem, forcing a tiebreaker which ended up with the Illini pulling out an 11-9 win.
But the Huskies rallied in singles beginning with a quick 6-3, 64 win by No. 82 Vanessa Wong at No. 1. Zoey Weil gutted out a 7-5 win in the first set of her match at No. 6 before cruising to a 6-0 win in the second set. Nika Zupancic was the third player off with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5.
The other three matches all went into a third set but Sedona Gallagher was the first off, clinching the match with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
The Huskies have a week off next week before returning to action on Friday, March 6, hosting Utah in Washington's Pac-12 Opener. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
