March 01, 2020 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. --- Alexis Griggsby scored a season-high 11 points and Washington's seniors Mai-Loni Henson had 11 and Amber Melgoza added 10 in their final regular-season game but No. 3 Oregon was too much as the Huskies suffered a 96-52 loss on Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena.
Β
The Huskies close out the regular season with a 13-16 overall record, finishing ninth in the Pac-12 with a 5-13 conference record. Washington faces the No. 8 seed Utah in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in a rematch of last season's first-round match-up won by the Huskies 64-54.
Β
Washington played well with the Ducks through 14 minutes of the game, but a 17-0 run by Oregon to close out the first half proved to be too much for the Huskies to overcome.
Β
Griggsby had the best game of her season with 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting including a pair of three pointers. She continued to play well in Eugene a year after scoring a career-best 26 points when the teams met last year.
Β
Henson added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists in her final regular-season game. Melgoza scored 10 pointsβall in the second half, moving into ninth on UW's all-time scoring list with 1,687 career points.
Β
Washington hung tight with Oregon through the first quarter. The Ducks opened with seven-straight points but after trading baskets, the Huskies used a 10-0 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Missy Peterson and T.T. Watkins to take a lead at 14-12 at the 3:21 mark. Oregon responded with five quick points, but a Henson three-pointer and tied it back up and the Huskies would trail by just one at 19-18 after one.
Β
Oregon would score the first five points of the second quarter to go up six, but the Huskies answered with a jumper by Alexis Griggsby and a layup from Quay Miller to cut the lead to two at 24-22. The Ducks again rattled off five straight with Mai-Loni Henson making a tough layup to bring Washington within five. But that bucket at the 6:29 mark would be the final basket of the half for the Huskies as Oregon scored 17-striaght to end the half and lead 46-24.
Β
Washington opened the second half strong, scoring a pair of buckets to make it 46-28. The teams went back and forth over the rest of the third quarter, but the Ducks would close the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 74-40 after three and pull away for the win.
