Huskies Earn Five Career-Highs In Home Opener
January 20, 2024 | Gymnastics
SEATTLE – The GymDawgs welcomed the No. 2 ranked team in the country on Saturday afternoon as they etched five career-highs on three different events.
The Huskies welcomed fans back to Alaska Airlines Arena for the first home meet of 2024 to recognize Purple Strong.
California took first place in the meet, winning it 197.875 to 196.050.
Lilly Tubbs got the energy flowing in the gym right from the get-go, leading off on vault and sticking a beautiful 9.875, a new career-best for the sophomore.
"I really enjoyed being the lead-off," Tubbs said. "I think I just bring the energy to everyone, so doing that well on vault felt really good and I feel like it set the tone for the rest of vault. The very beginning of the meet is the most important because that is when you are committing to your energy and committing to your mindset for the meet."
Head Coach Jen Llewellyn also spoke highly of Tubbs' vault, and the tenacity of her team to stay close the entire meet with a No. 2-ranked Bears squad.
"It was amazing. We knew that (9.875) was in her (Tubbs)," said Llewellyn. "She's practiced that and prepared for that but for her to execute was amazing.
"We have such a young team and they're still trying to figure out their place in competition and working on settling their nerves and composure," Llewellyn continued. "The talent is there, and the routines are there. Now it's just the details. We keep talking about being aggressive and attacking our gymnastics – going for handstands, absorbing the landings, so we're not giving up half-tenths here and there. It's nice to see that our team has the routines there, now it's just going forward and not being afraid to find that landing or find that handstand."
Kristin Lin competed on three events for the third straight meet and earned career-highs on two of them. She tied her career-high score 9.825 on vault while earning a new career-best 9.825 on floor.
Skylar Killough-Wilhelm led all Washington scorers on bars and beam, earning a 9.825 on the unevens and tying her career-best 9.925 on beam – and tying for second overall on the meet -- to contribute to 39.375 all-around.
Emily Innes had herself a night, tying for first place with a career-best-tying 9.925 on floor and a 9.825 on beam.
