SEATTLE – Washington head gymnastics coach Jessa Hansen Parker has announced the first member of her inaugural Husky coaching staff on Tuesday, with Jeffrey Langenstein remaining on Montlake as an assistant coach.
Having spent the last three seasons on staff at Washington, Langenstein will also serve as the GymDawgs' recruiting coordinator.
"I am thrilled that Jeffrey is staying on staff," Hansen Parker said. "He has been an incredible asset to the GymDawgs and will provide continuity for the team and serve as a tremendous resource for me. We started our NCAA coaching careers together, making this a particularly special and full-circle moment for me. I am honored to coach alongside him and look forward to all the ways we can elevate the program together."
Since joining the UW staff, Langenstein has led floor choreography for the GymDawgs, helping the 2024 team to its fifth highest floor score in program history. With a 49.525 during the NCAA Regional Second Round in Berkeley, the FloorDawgs notched four 9.850+ scores to etch their names in program history. Senior Skylar Killough-Wilhelm and sophomore Emily Innes earned NCAA Regional Co-Champion honors with their pair of 9.950s.
Langenstein guided his first student-athlete at Washington to NCAA Nationals, as Killough-Wilhelm qualified as an individual all-arounder for the NCAA National Championships. Killough-Wilhelm, who earned First Team All-Pac-12 All-Around, Regional Floor Co-Champion (9.950) and two-time Pac-12 Coaches Choice of the Week — received her first All-American honors in Fort Worth where she earned First Team All-American (Bars) and Second Team All-American (All-Around) honors.
In 2023, Langenstein helped lead the GymDawgs to their first NCAA Regional Final since 2018. The team earned a 196.775, their second highest team score of the year, in the second round of the Los Angeles Regionals to advance to the Regional Final for the first time in five seasons. The squad's 196.775 was good for a second place finish in the Huskies' session of the Regional, upsetting then No. 12 Auburn and besting Southern Utah.
Langenstein helped lead Washington to its highest score ever at Regionals in the 2022 season where they faced No. 5 Alabama, No. 12 Michigan State and BYU. Washington finished with a final team score of 197.175, the second time the Huskies broke the 197 mark in the season.
Langenstein joined the Washington gymnastics program in 2021 after three years as an assistant at San Jose State.
In his time with the Spartans, Langenstein helped lead the team to a second-place finish at the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships, where the team posted a season-high score of 195.450, which was the 11th-best mark in program history.
Before his time with San Jose State, Langenstein spent two seasons as an assistant under former UW head coach Jen Llewellyn at Lindenwood. His main responsibilities were on vault and floor, helping the team to the highest RQS in school history on vault and the second highest on floor in 2017. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and was named the 2018 MIC Assistant Coach of the Year.
Prior to Lindenwood, Langenstein worked alongside Hansen Parker at Cal as a volunteer assistant coach. He was part of the 2016 team that advanced to the NCAA Championships and finished seventh. That team finished the year 11th on the floor nationally. The 2015 team finished 18th in the country, while the floor team earned a 12th-place national ranking.
While at Cal, Langenstein coached many top gymnasts, including Toni-Ann Williams, a 2016 Olympian for Jamaica. She was a six-time regular-season All-American, NCAA Vault Champion (2015), Pac-12 Freshman of the Year (2015) and Pac-12 Floor Champion (2016).
Langenstein transitioned to coaching after he competed for the Golden Bears from 2010-14. He specialized on the floor, still rings, vault and parallel bars. The team made four NCAA Championship appearances, finishing fourth in 2011 and 2012. He qualified as an individual for the NCAA semifinals multiple times on floor and vault.
Langenstein graduated from Cal with a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies and is currently pursuing a master's degree in UW's Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership program.
