Steinbach Tabbed Big Ten Freshman Of The Week
December 08, 2025 | Men's Basketball
ROSEMONT, Ill. – After securing a pair of 20-point double doubles in early conference action against UCLA and USC, Washington's Hannes Steinbach has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.
The true freshman forward becomes UW's first-ever Big Ten Weekly Award winner, and the first Husky to receive a conference weekly award since Sahvir Wheeler was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Dec. 18, 2023.
Returning from a three-game absence due to injury, the German international made a statement in his first action against Big Ten opposition, averaging 26.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists during the week.
Steinbach has registered a double double in five-consecutive games, becoming the first Husky to have a double double streak of at least five games since Jon Brockman posted seven straight in 2008.
In his Big Ten debut, Steinbach was nearly perfect shooting against UCLA, making 11-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 free throws en route to 29 points, adding 10 rebounds as Washington saw its comeback attempt fall just short to the Bruins, 82-80.
Three days later, led by Steinbach, the Husky comeback would not be denied. The rookie post led Washington with 24 points and sixteen rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, as UW erased an 18-point halftime deficit to beat No. 24 USC 84-76 in Los Angeles.
Combining with former Trojans Desmond Claude and Wesley Yates III, Steinbach spearheaded the second half effort, dropping 14 points, eight boards and a pair of assists in the final 20 minutes to snap Washington's 11-game losing streak to USC.
Steinbach and the Huskies resume non-conference play with four-straight games in Seattle to close out December, beginning with a 3:00 p.m. PT tipoff with Southern Utah Saturday at Alaska Airlines Arena. Tickets are available.
