April 16, 2025 | Men's Basketball
SEATTLE – Washington head men's basketball coach Danny Sprinkle added the fourth member to its incoming freshman class on Thursday, signing German international big man Hannes Steinbach to a Big Ten Athletic Scholarship Agreement.
Steinbach, widely considered to be one of the top European prospects in his age group, currently competes for Würzburg Baskets of the German Bundesliga, the nation's top league.
"We are very excited for Hannes to join Washington basketball," Sprinkle said. "He brings a great skill set, IQ and toughness along with tremendous size to our program. He has competed at the highest level of international basketball with diverse opportunities and has been extremely successful while doing it. His experiences and maturity will be beneficial with our competitive schedule."
In 25 games with Würzburg this season, Steinbach is averaging 7.1 points on 68.0 percent from the field, grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game.
Playing with Würzburg's academy in Germany's second division, Steinbach is averaging 25.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.5 blocks.
Averaging 24.6 points for Germany in FIBA U18 action, Steinbach averaged 15.4 points, 12.7 rebounds (including 6.0 on the offensive end) and 1.4 blocks per game in international competition.
Steinbach joins a Husky recruiting class that also includes four star prospects Niko Bundalo, JJ Mandaquit and Courtland Muldrew.
