Huskies Fall To No. 31 Illinois In Final Regular Season Matchup
April 20, 2025 | Men's Tennis
SEATTLE - The Huskies fell to No. 31 Illinois today in their final match of the regular season.
The Huskies struggled to find their footing early on, losing two out of the three matches in doubles play. This led to them trailing by one point going into singles.
Needing four wins in singles to clinch the match, the Dawgs found it hard to come back from the early deficit. Due to an injury in the first set, Washington's Ivan Sodan forfeited his match. This gave Illinois a two-point lead.
Cesar Bouchelaghem put up a good fight against No. 14 Kenta Miyoshi, going into a third set but ultimately trailing 2-6, 6-2, 3-6.
Dzianis Zharyn also had a close match of his own against No. 76 William Mroz but lost in the third set.
Soham Purohit, Nedim Suko and Rohan Belday all finished out their matches despite Illinois clinching the match at this point. Purohit win his match agains Zach Viiala 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5). The match resulted in a final score of 1-6.
Three seniors were also honored in today's match. Cesar Bouchelagham, Dzianis Zharyn and Nedim Suko have all committed the last four years to wearing the Husky uniform. Today marked their last time playing on home court.
"All three of these Huskies, Cesar, Nedim and Dzianis, have given a lot to this program. It has been a pleasure to see them grow as individuals and as Huskies," said Head Coach Rahim Esmail.
"We are all very proud of what these guys have accomplished during their time at UW, and we look forward to what's in front of us as we know that these three will continue to trust the process and build our product until the last ball is hit."
Next up, the Dawgs will head into post season play. They will have their first matchup of The Big Ten Spring Championships at the end of this week.
